Okra for Mid Autumn Festival? OK by me!

About a week after we got here, we were invited to a government-sponsored forum in honor of the Chinese Moon Festival holiday. It was a typical upscale Chinese conference and banquet in a nice hotel, with tea, fruit, speeches, then a reception in the banquet hall with nice dishes and lots of toasting. But there was a surprise: okra! This is the first time in our 10 years here that we have EVER seen okra in China, except the time i grew some on my own back porch in Jingzhou one year. To find some at this banquet was a big surprise, to say the least. It wasn't deep-fried, but it tasted great; they had stir-fried it with pork and red peppers. You never know what you are going to see next, huh? In the photo, the okra is that green stuff front and center, just in case you cannot recognize it if it isn't breaded. Ha ha.
