Summer!

We are looking forward to seeing all of you in Tennessee for the SUMMER! It has been a long year full of His Blessing. There have been lots of challenges, but He has provided and seen us through, and we are full of joy. Phoebe is doing good, 12 pounds or so now. The weather is warming up.

We had 21 people at the Hardins this past Sunday. Lots of old, new, and visitors. It was great to see so many. As for new contacts, please keep a guy named Jerry in your prayers. He's a student at school who has shown some promise of late. And also two new girls who came on Sunday. And there may be some other students who are showing some fledgling interest.

Also pr-y that Margaret, Shenli "and them" will continue to meet when none of us are in town for a few weeks. Basically the month of July is the only time we will all be gone, but I would like to hear that they had gotten together on their own during that time. I've made some suggestions for what they could study together this summer when we have gotten together on the occasional Friday.

Also, we would like to give out some Bibles to get some people thinking over the summer...pray we will be directed to the right people to give them to, and that they will read them.

So, as you can see, we have a lot to be thinking about...I didn't even mention us packing and moving to ZUST yet. That's going to happen June 17-18. We could use your prayers there as well.

Who's Next?

Next was baptized Sunday. What a celebration!! Next brought like seven of his friends and classmates we had never met before plus regulars, and GaoYan's Dad had just arrived from the hometown, so we had a little more than 20 people. Next is a senior student friend of Jeff, Cathy, and Tanner. God has been active in his life this year.

These two short emails from Next say a lot about him.

Hi Josh and GaoYan
Thank you for your verses sharing.
Actually i learned more about Jesus Christ who died for us, so i decided to follow the words of Jesus Christ.
one idea is that when i get baptized, holy spirit will dwell on my heart and protect me forever and will have a great impact on my life.
i will be grateful if you can tell more about Holy Spirit.
NEXT

Hi Josh and GaoYan
Thank you for your sharing. recently i am so excited to be Christian that it is hard for me to sleep early.
I am praying for God to change my heart to love him deeper and deeper. and i am eager to establish stronger relationship with Jesus Christ.By the way, i am going to invite 5-9 good friends of mine on Sunday morning.
Is it all right?
best wishes!!

Jeff and Cathy suggested for those who wish to say some encouraging words to Next. Many of his friends spoke in Chinese of their desire for faith, but said they struggled so much to find faith. They were amazed by their friend Next who had decided to follow Jesus.

Next has pursued righteousness, godliness, faith, and love. Next has been called to eternal life in Jesus Christ.

I Timothy 6:11-12 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Let us be in prayer for Next and let us pray for "Who is next?"

Joy

Joy GaoXing Davis has arrived. At 11:00 pm as GaoYan and I prepared for bed after another long day, GaoYan said "O." We called a car and grabbed the suitcase. The car ride lasted 45 minutes through the tunnel, past West Lake, and to the hospital. By 1:30 am, May 22 Joy was born. Just 2.5 hours! I was not allowed in the delivery room. GaoYan asked for an epidural for the pain, but it was too late. We spent about 6 hours in the hallway waiting for a room after delivery.

We see how God had everything planned out so perfectly. Like the car ride to the hospital was late at night. What if it had been during the day with traffic the trip is an hour and a half? Caleb had just fallen asleep. After living in the hallway for 6 hours we got a two person room, instead of 6 person room plus relatives.

Joy weighed 8.4 jin, that's over 9 pounds.

Out of the mouth of babes

One day in Early March, March 6th to be exact, Jon was outside on the e-bike. He and Hallie were about to go somewhere. Jon was waiting for Hallie and a Chinese girl and her mom walked by. He heard one of them say something like,"...Yeah her hair was all up in pigtails..." . So he chased them down ( he was on the e-bike) and asked where they were from. They are from California.

Anyway, this family has two daughters. Bliss is 10 and Carissa is 5. Both girls were born in the US. They speak both Chinese and English and often mix the two. Jane and her husband Peter went to school in the US and were there for about 10 years. They moved to Hangzhou in July. They live in a building very near ours. Now Hallie and Bliss are big buddies! They play together as much as possible. They are an answer to several of our prayers.

I am still working on the relationship with Jane. We talk while we watch the little kids run around and bother the older girls. One day she asked me if we go to church on Sunday. I answered, "yes" and then asked her if she did. She kinda laughed and said, "no". She said that they did go to a Chinese church some while they were in America. I told her about our meeting and invited her. She did not really seem that interested but maybe someday....

Ever since Hallie met this family, she ALWAYS mentions them when there are prayer requests. She almost always mentions them whenever she leads a prayer. She really wants them to seek Him.

Tonight she went to the store and ate dinner with them. She asked Bliss if she wanted to come on Sunday, she said she did not know; ask her mom. So she did! It was that simple. She just asked. She said it did make her feel uncomfortable, but she still asked.

Jane told Hallie that she did not believe in God yet, so she did not think she should. Hallie said that it seemed like Bliss really wanted to come though. Maybe she will later.

I am so proud of Hallie for taking this step. She has found other small ways to share her faith with her friend and her family. Hallie is only 9, and is still learning and is not a Christian yet, but she knows what is important. We can learn a lot from Hallie.

Clarks: The Rise & Fall of Demetrius

In the tiny epistle of 3 John, a man named Demetrius is mentioned as having “received a good testimony from everyone and from the truth itself” (v.12 – ESV). This name is mentioned elsewhere in the New Testament, although it (presumably) does not refer to the same person. In the history of the Acts (19:24, 38) a silversmith named Demetrius leads the charge against Paul when his and his fellow craftsmen’s idol-making business is threatened by the gospel of the one, true God.

Maybe you’ve never known anyone named Demetrius, but believe it or not, I have – a Chinese girl, actually, who had somehow chosen this as her “English” name. We were introduced to her by a Sino-Australian English teacher/missionary named Ann.

Ann was a woman of great energy and conviction who favored a charismatic expression of faith and who downplayed the necessity of water baptism as a part of the conversion experience. She had led Demetrius in a prayer of “acceptance of Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior” and then introduced her to us, hoping that she would be able to join our small, student-based house church. We obliged, of course, but only upon two conditions: first, she needed to be baptized; second, she needed to change her English name.

See, I had never noticed the reference in 3 John (and didn’t bother to check a concordance), so based on the verses in Acts, I said there was no way that a female Christian should be named after an idol-crafting man. Besides, this girl was already stricken with the misfortune of having one eye that seemed perpetually red and swollen. Having such an ugly name from such a terrible person could only make matters worse. Why not change her name to something more palatable, like Deborah?

But Demetrius (who would in fact come to be known as Deborah) was hurt. She liked her English name – liked the sound of it, she said. Ann was offended, too. She wasn’t sure why we insisted so strongly that “Deborah” be called Deborah – and she was certainly annoyed by our insistence that the newly-named Deborah would not be properly considered a Christian until after being baptized. I argued, unswervingly and at some length, about both issues – having ample biblical evidence at my fingertips and abundant arrogance in my heart. Eventually, (perhaps Nevertheless) both Ann and Deborah agreed to our terms, submitted to our conditions, and joined our fellowship.

As we got to know her, we learned about strange boyfriends and questionable jobs – dating more than one much-older African man and working for a time as a sort of barmaid. We let her know, in no uncertain terms, that we did not approve of these behaviors. She felt ashamed and promised to do better.

It wasn’t until years later that I happened to come across that verse in 3 John – the one that effectively exonerates the name Demetrius, honoring this second man as an exemplary brother. But by that time, it was too late. Our Demetrius/Deborah had long since left the church, and apparently left the faith. She somehow never felt accepted. Not by us, and tragically, not by God.

I wish I could talk to her again. I would apologize for many of the things I said and for most of the way I acted. And I would make sure that, above all else, she understood and experienced the gospel of God’s grace and compassion and love.

[BTW, When she left China, Ann gave us a gift – a DVD movie about a foreign missionary to China whose Chinese name, given to her by the locals, means “True Love”; and also, a small pamphlet entitled “Overcoming Legalism”.]

Look what I found!!

I found this at our near- by Wal-mart!!! I was out with the kids, and we were planning on getting ice cream after we finished our shopping. I knew we would be thirsty, so I wanted to get some water. We went down the aisle with the water, and all of a sudden Hallie yells out, "Dr Pepper!!". I stared in disbelief for a split second and then did a crazy little "Happy Dance". We were laughing so loud! People were really looking at us strangely (they do that anyway, oh well).
I whipped out my phone and took this picture. I sent it to several other foreigners ( to give them a fair chance to buy some if they want to). I bought 5 cans. We will probably go back in a day or so to see if they still have any. I wonder if they will continue to carry this. Even if they do not, it was a great treat to be able to buy some. It will be an even greater treat to drink some soon.

Student Study

Now that the weather is nice, this is where we study on Thursday afternoons with the students in the shade of a small tree sitting on the lawn next to our teaching building. The student study began the semester with a group of three senior boys and Sherry and Amanda. One by one the boys have become too busy completing senior research papers and finding jobs. We knew it would happen this way, but we still felt discouraged that the group got smaller and smaller. In addition, we have been feeling empty by Sherry and Amanda’s seemingly lack of progress. Amanda’s mother is Buddhist, so she does not want to disrespect her mother. Sherry used to always say she believed, but lately she seems to be questioning and going backwards.
But this Thursday afternoon Sherry and Amanda shared some encouraging stories. Amanda had read a book about a Chinese man who left his job and traveled to Southeast Asia looking for a spiritual life. The man kept meeting Christians, and in his search for a spiritual life found Jesus. Sherry shared about her high school classmate who had become a Christian. Her classmate talked about the importance of spending lots of time with other Christians. He said he will only marry another Christian when that time comes. Sherry said that he had changed so much.
Matthew 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.
We have studied this verse in the student study several times to say that God is searching for them. But when I feel discouraged and empty and lack trust my Father will come and find me. He is not willing that I would be lost.
